Some Random Notes

  • This applet shows the network traffic of the PC. Apprently, there are many out going network packets. Amazingly, these packets travel the the other side of the world, to East coast of the States.
  • When I was having dinner at the KFC, one piece of my glass of my specticles dropped on the chicken bones, mixed with chilli source. I feel like I'm blind when I talk home.
  • I'm beginning to learn how to work with RSS. I don't see anything good of the RSS broswer application though, but I do find the RSS aggregating websites interesting. however, it seems hard to find local newspaper RSS feeds.

10 Gb of video clips gone... in 1 minute

Yesterday night, I got home late. I tried to remove an unwanted directory, but I made a mistake by executing the command in the 'parent' directory. Within less than a minute, myt harddisk has more than 10gb of disk space and I lost more than 10gb of video clips. This disaster is not as bad as the last time I encounter similair disaster. Instead, I restarted all the bittorrent downloads as the torrent files are kept in separate directory.

Letter... of offer...

Today, the people in the department informed me about the letter of offer. It'll be as soon as 1st Semtember. I think I'm expected to sign and return straight away. Until now, I haven't read through thoroughly. Well, it's not because I don't trust anybody, it's just that I have no excitement to sign it right away. Because why? This signature is important, it signifies the start of my venture, alone. Besides, many things have been bothering me, the stupid program which I'm expected to code. The stupid test dates which I got to change, with possibilities of paying USD 40 because of my ignorance. My dental appointment which I postponed until the last minute... I'm troubled.

My biggest credit card transaction ever...

Today, I had my biggest internet credit card transaction. With only a few clicks, 15 minutes, I carried out TWO transactions, USD 130 + USD 140. USD 270 is enough to last a month for meal. And, it's also my biggest bet ever, ever in my life. If I lose, I don't lose only that USD270, but... a lot, well not a lot, but everything... But who cares? we all come to this world without one thing, right?

Table Tennis in Olympic

Table Tennis is a game that I watch the most in Olympic. The game is fun to watch, esp for single. Table tennis is also hot in town too, it's the first Silver ever won for table tennis. Singapore is also fighting for her medal in the game too... but...

But what can we say? those players fighting for the medals, from 3 countries, are originally from the same team! The only thing new is the female player from the North Korea, but I dob't like her, she's too arogant.

Mr BLOW's got a phone line?

Mr BLOW finally got his phone line? Can you believe it? I used to call him (IDD) 40 cents a minute, and now, I can call him at a special rate of 18 cents per minute, while he's acutally father away from me!! I didn't what to talk. But I just him that his life miserable, and can't get worse. Before I hang up, I had a fews words with Mrs BLOW. Her voice is expectedly but surprisingly dull, I could imagine what kinda of life they are leading. During that short conversation, she reminds me of one person -- lorraine, (not the Teacher Lorraine). Just cross my finger that she won't end up like...

The WineHQ (although not a new project)

Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) has been around for many years, but it's my first time trying to give it a try seriously today. I got a small program, written in Delphi, and I was too lazy to reboot to win32. So I give Wine a try. I downladed the latest RPM from their officaial web wite (not built by Mandrake itself, since it always gives me depenency program). Off I go I got it working without the need for configuration. I think it automagically get info from your win32 partition and mirroe it as mush as possible. Cool! But later, I still reboot to win32 to run the program, it need sorts of say million english words, emulator is still an emulator.

Another update: I hear comments about giving the live XML feed for this blog. In fact, I knew I could do that, but I didn't see mush if this feature is really welcome for readers. But I'll try and do something to it. stay tuned. ;)

Transferring Ideas...

There's always something that I want to write it down. Transferring idea is always important in everybody's life. Esp for the things that I'm doing, I need to program according to the PhD student's ideas. To start off, I'll need to implement/modify software/codes that does idea [A.1]. He thought of a new idea, [A.2], and he needed to tell me what his idea is about. I know a little about [A.1]. But first told the [A.2] by explaining the *finest* detail of a small part of [A.2], call it the [A.2.1.1.1.3] (imagine it follows the chapter/section/subsection in a book hierarchy), then [A.2.1.1.1], [A.2.1.1]., finally [A.2.1]. I was so bored that I dun get a thing after the whole discussion. Then today, I finally realize that I'll need to do [A.2.2] and [A.2.3] in order to complete [A.2]. I can't comment on him, but if I were to do that, I'll use the "top-down" approach rather than the bottom-up approach.

Situatin for me is always a lose-lose situation. If I bring it up with him, he'lll think that I'm just whining and I'm looking for excuses in front of that professor. If I don't, I'll continue to bug him for [A.2.2] and [A.2.3], which he may think that they are all trivial (but I don't even have the big picture!) and continue to look down on me. I don't like this idea, I don't like the way as if he's giving tuition by asking me questions before he manage to paint the full picture.

-- mr blog

2 Comment(s):

I couldn't stand it, and I confronted him. Asked him,
"You do A.2.1 is because you want to do A.2.2 and A.2.3 just like what A.1 is doing?". He said in surprise, "you didn't know?" I almost shouted out my "F" words. Why has his problem become my problem?

My first China tour

It's considered my first China tour, after the visit to Beijing in 199?. I'm going to a Chinese National Park, called the Zhang-Jia-Jie. Actually I has no idea what is it about, and I thought it's quite near to HK. But by doing a google search, the view is like those views that appears in those Jin-Yong matial art shows.

And this weekend, at home, I watched another DVD, "Love Is A Many Stupid Thing 2004". It's again another spoof of the Inferior Affair. At least I didn't fall asleep and I had a good laugh at it.

It's nested loop!

I'm glad to see that someone is able to appreciate that. Anyway, the "nested loop" is trying to make the recursive effect.

Oh no... the Malaysian Idol...

I spent 2 days for waiting for may bittorrent cient to download... but I watched for the first 5 mins and I deleted the files. I couldn't stand the stage and its decoration. From an 100 sq metre auditorial room (as in american idol) to a small, poorly renovated small studio in Malaysia TV.

Sorry for any Malaysian reading this, but I just don't want to spoil my mood. I still want to look as the "Singapore Idol" for more performace like "Lemon Tree".

You know damn well the only Malaysian ever going to read your blog is me ;). But there is no need to apologize. I didn't even though American Idol was anything, much less whatever Idol that copy the original.

This post has been removed by the author.

Don't be like that lah... Anyway, to use that 'copied' name, I think the organizer needs to pay some fee to the original creater, and they have to conform very strictly, like logo, rules of the game... etc. So I'd expect some standard from them.
But as I'm not a racist or sexist... etc, I also see elsewhere with the "Idol" competition, and they are poorly organized too, like this and that.
By HonL, at 8/13/2004 06:54:47 PM

I know. ;) It's a Malaysian thingy.

Willian Hung, the Second?

Another Chinese getting a lot of media attention from Idol show. This time not from the American Idol, but the Australian Idol. At least, bottom line is that William looks boyishly cute and idiotic... but ...

-- mr blog

2 Comment(s):

"Idiotic"? How can you put that together with "cute" and said it's the bottomline?
By Zuraffo, at 8/12/2004 02:59:09 PM

Eh.. then can I put it as "boyishly and idiotically cute...".
Or, you have other thought on WH. If you view the "Flynn's" performace, you know what I'm saying and you better appreciate what WH has brought to America.

Happy Birthday, Singapore

It's National Day of Republic of Singapore today. It was always be a holiday day to me. This year, I no longer have holiday, but insteads, I'm looking forward to the NDP (national day parade)... to end.
;)
To tell more precisely, I'm looking for the airing of "Singapore Idol"... to see how it's different from American Idol? How crappy is it, and how untalented it ir? But anyway, Singapore can at least still have the `gut' to show. Why not "Singaporean Idol"? At first I thought to myself that maybe the word is not long to show in the blue logo, so they had to cut short to "Singapore". But after seeing the "Indonesian Idol", I become puzzled again. (the word "Indonesian" is still one character shorter than the word "Singaporean", nevertheless.)

No more draft...

Thesis has been the 'draft' status for so long. I've been sick of reading it again.... esp something that people might not want to read. So I just thought to myself, "hey! why not go ahead and submit it and only worry about it when it comes back...?". So I wasted 300+ pages of my printing quota, printed out a total of 5 copies (required 4), and submitted to faculty office. After submission, I feel a lot 'lighter', one less thing to worry. But that'll mean that I've got to concentrate more on other things. but the big question is, will it be this year or will it be the next year?

Too much to update, so little time...

Few things have been happening to me since last update,

  • Continued to used my Sony Clie which I used to do. Although it has a few nice features over the old one, I didn't made full use of it. But I's okay, I needed one anyway. The webcam funtion is awesome, but I dared not to use it like webcam, as it's just a too expensive webcam.
  • I finally brought myself to finalize my draft, printed out, going to send for binding. But before that, I need to get my supervisor to sign the "yes, i've read it" form. I acted thick skin and go up to dr supt for his signature. I remembered he didn't voice a sound... Am I really that worthless?
  • I'm again in charge of organising the badminton session, without people asking me to do it. I feeling a little tired that people are just taking things for granted, because I used to do it. Anyway, I only sent an email, asking "those who want to join, indicate attendence". But obviously, no one has replied yet, and I'm not going to make any call. I think I've done (more than) enough as to wait until 12:00am (shape) midnight to fight to book the badminton court, and further confirmed it by going to clubhouse, paying up for the court.
